With a dedicated team of passionate booksellers, Ridgecrest Books is writing a new chapter in Shoreline’s story.
Meet Ridgecrest Books: A Q&A with the Owners
What inspired you to start your business?
All three of us—Kevin Roberts, Becky Merilatt, and Mary Elliott—have been booksellers for a long time and love the job. It's been a long-time dream of Becky's to own her own shop, and with Kevin on board as co-owner, the timing was finally right!
What service does your business provide for our community?
The bookstore has quickly become a community gathering place—we love to see neighbors meeting up at the store or running into each other here. We offer author events, a book club, personalized book recommendations, and a comfortable space to browse for books. We've also partnered with some Shoreline schools to host book fairs, helping them stretch budgets and earn store credit.
Why is your business based in Shoreline?
Becky lives in Shoreline and has been raising her kids here. Part of our decision was based on the desire to give back to the community that has already given her so much. After dealing with many commercial real estate companies while touring spaces in Seattle, we were impressed by how genuine and supportive Megan Kogut (our building owner, who also owns the Drumlin and Ridgecrest Pub) was as a landlord. Everything fell into place after that!
What has been your proudest moment in business so far?
We hosted a storytime event with Ben Clanton (creator of Narwhal and Jelly) and Andy Chou Musser for their book Paint With Ploof. The store was packed with local families and regular customers, creating a vibrant moment that perfectly captured the community spirit we aim to foster.
How do you approach customer service, and what sets you apart?
We have a small team of three experienced booksellers who love their job and view it as a career or vocation. We greet everyone who walks through the door, do our best to fulfill special orders quickly, and truly value each customer, whether they make a purchase or not.
What’s your next upcoming event?
January 29th, 6–7 PM: Monthly Book Club
January 30th, 7 PM: Panel with three Nancy Pearl Award finalists
February 2nd, 11 AM: Lunar New Year Storytime with illustrator Michelle Jing Chan
February 8th, 2 PM: Celebration event with Will Taylor, author of The School for Wicked Witches series
