Come join us for our Monthly Volunteer Training at the Shoreline Tool Library! This is a great opportunity to learn more about how you can get involved and help out at the tool library. Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or brand new, everyone is welcome. We’ll cover everything you need to know to check in and out tools, assist members, and answer all your questions. A safe space for healthcare workers to create community & connection, find support around burnout. Facilitated by Doris, RN who worked as a nurse for over 20 years experiencing many cycles of burnout during her career. Now she works with nurses experiencing burnout in 1:1 coaching and brings all her knowledge and experience to healthcare workers in workshops focusing on getting Beyond Burnout.

Learn Machine Sewing - Make a Potholder
Learn how to sew on a sewing machine and make a potholder perfect for a gift! No previous sewing experience is required. All tools and supplies will be provided. This will be a beginner-friendly class to learn the basics of machine sewing where you get the opportunity to make a potholder and take it home.
About the instructor, Ava: Ava learned sewing from her Mom who used to teach sewing classes. Ava then moved on to teaching classes herself at the makerspaces at UW. She has experience with making all types of items from bags to dresses, and also loves to troubleshoot machines!

Garden Design II
In this class, we’ll start to sketch out your space and brainstorm ideas for how to begin. As we work through each person’s project, we’ll learn more about design principles and ways to create a more beautiful and functional outdoor space. Class participants are encouraged to submit photos of the areas they would like advice on (directions for this in the confirmation email following a ticket purchase).
Attendance at the first class is not required, but it is recommended, and you can sign up here!
About the instructor, Susan Gregory: Susan is a landscape designer with many years of experience both designing and implementing small and large landscape projects. She holds a degree in landscape design from Edmonds Community College and completed a permaculture course with Toby Hemenway. She ran a successful design/build company for 12 years.

Technical reviewers will be available to help with questions regarding your house, property, land uses, and streets along with City requirements and permit information. We are excited to announce additional dates to host the Fred Hutch Mammogram Van! It is incredibly convenient to come to the Center for your yearly screening! It ensures timely access to essential health screenings without the need for long travel or waiting times. This service brings peace of mind and promotes active health management within the community.
Appointments are scheduled directly with the Fred Hutch’s scheduling line. Unfortunately, the van cannot accommodate participants requiring wheelchairs, walkers, or canes.

We’ll cover the aspects to consider when dreaming of turning your outdoor spaces into more productive, beautiful and functional places to be. Topics like screening, paths and patios, irrigation, lighting, plant selection, edible landscapes, and retaining walls will be covered.

Zippers 101
In this class, students will learn how to use a sewing machine to install a zipper. We will focus on (and practice!) basic zipper installations using acrylic coil zippers. We will also discuss more complex applications such as invisible zips, metal zippers, and zip flies.
Prerequisite: Sewers of all levels are welcome, as long as they have at least a basic practical understanding of machine sewing, including terms such as backstitching, seam allowance, and stitch length.
About the instructor, Amelia: Amelia taught adult general and apparel sewing classes for four years. During that time, she taught zipper classes for beginning-level sewers as well as a backpacks class and some garment sewing classes which involved more advanced zipper installations (beefier zippers, invisible zippers, etc).

How to Buy a Used Bike

André and Nancy will teach you how to determine if a bike fits, how to make sure everything works, what to look for during your test rides, where to shop, and what questions to ask. Join us for a lively and informed discussion on all things used bicycles.
About the instructors, André and Nancy: André and Nancy are both seasoned cyclists. Nancy teaches bicycling, and Andre makes sure that all bicycles donated to our tool libraries are in good working condition before we sell them.

MARCH Getting Beyond Burnout: A Workshop for Everyone in Healthcare
Feeling angry at the world or stuck in burnout? This 90-minute workshop helps healthcare workers understand how nervous system dysregulation, emotional coping, and workplace culture fuel burnout—and what to do about it. Gain tools to reclaim control, reduce overwhelm, and build resilience. Nurses earn 1.5 CEs through Debriefing the Front Lines. Cost is $75, facilitated by Doris Taylor, RN BSN, who left a 20-year career due to burnout to coach others in finding relief.

"Fireside Chat" with Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal
We are excited to announce that Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal will be joining us this Thursday, March 20, 2025 for a "Fireside Chat" from 11:45am-12:45pm in the Main Dining Room of the 9000 Building.
As Shoreline’s Congressional Representative for Washington’s 7th District, Congresswoman Jayapal will share insights about her background, her work in Congress, and her efforts on behalf of Washington State. She will also take questions from our campus community, creating an opportunity for meaningful dialogue.
Elected in 2016, Congresswoman Jayapal is now serving her fifth term in Congress. She is the first South Asian American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and one of only two dozen naturalized citizens currently serving. She is a Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement and also serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Budget Committee.
This is a wonderful opportunity for Shoreline, and we hope you’ll join us. A big thank you to the WAVES Center for helping to organize this important conversation.

It’s time to start collecting all those items around the house that need to be fixed but you don’t know how. We are having a fixing night at the new Shoreline Tool Library. We will help you fix and learn to fix your broken tools, lamps, toys, furniture, appliances, and any other broken items that you can carry in on your own. We encourage you to help as much as you can and enjoy the community of reuse!

Technical reviewers will be available to help with questions regarding your house, property, land uses, and streets along with City requirements and permit information. Depending on the scope of your project, you can meet with up to three technical reviewers. Note: Meetings with technical reviewers are only open to Shoreline property owners.

3D Printer Orientation: The Basics
Learn how to find, prepare, and print 3D models on our Prusa MK3S+ 3D printer! No previous knowledge is required. This class will cover where to source 3D models online, how to slice files using Prusa Slicer, and how to operate the machine. You are encouraged to bring your own laptop to the class and download Prusa Slicer by clicking here, but it is not required.
This class will not include a 3D modeling aspect. If you are interested in learning 3D modeling, check out our other class—3D Printer Orientation: Foundations of CAD
Taking the 3D Printer Orientation is required to use our in-house printer. You must also be a member of NE Seattle Tool Library or Shoreline Tool Library to take this class. Become a member here!

Tutors at Shoreline Library (Study Zone)
Volunteer tutors provide homework help for grades K-12. They can also give language support for homework or translation in many languages.
Students may drop in any time during Tutor hours. Look for volunteers wearing the Tutor t-shirt.

WORK PARTY @Paramount Open Space Park
We invite you to our upcoming work party! We’re excited to continue our restoration efforts at Paramount Open Space with the help of volunteer neighbors, friends, and family. People of all ages welcome as no experience is necessary. A great opportunity to meet your neighbors and build community!
Invasive Plant Removal
Help us continue to remove invasive plants and roots in preparation for future planting. We will expand out from the area that was cleared out, near the parking lot, at the previous two work parties. We may also tackle other sites within the park.
Tools
All necessary tools will be provided. Coffee, water, and light snacks also provided. Help us reduce waste by bringing a refillable bottle.
Remember to dress for the weather with long sleeves and boots.

Seeds: Start, Swap, and Share
In this class, we’ll work together to start vegetables, flowers, and herbs from seed. By pooling our resources we can check this task off of our garden chore list, rather than waiting too long and, yet again, buying plant starts from the nursery. By starting plants from seed we have access to more varieties than are usually readily available.
Please bring any seeds you have to share and any small containers to start seeds in. If you have any shadow plant trays to bring home your starts, please bring them. We’ll have some supplies on hand as well.
About the instructor, Susan Gregory: Susan is a landscape designer with many years of experience both designing and implementing small and large landscape projects. She holds a degree in landscape design from Edmonds Community College and completed a permaculture course with Toby Hemenway. She ran a successful design/build company for 12 years.

Tool Sharpening
This tool sharpening class is taught by Joel Gregory, one of the founding members of the NE Seattle Tool Library. He’ll show you how to sharpen a variety of tools, from shovels to loppers to hand pruners to tin snips. He’ll discuss a variety of sharpening techniques and answer any questions you may have about what tool to use for which job.

Beyond Burnout Support Group
Community | Connection | Support
A safe space for healthcare workers to create community & connection, find support around burnout. Facilitated by Doris, RN who worked as a nurse for over 20 years experiencing many cycles of burnout during her career. Now she works with nurses experiencing burnout in 1:1 coaching and brings all her knowledge and experience to healthcare workers in workshops focusing on getting Beyond Burnout.

Wisdom Cafe: Caregiving: Yours, Mine and Theirs
At some point, we will either become caregivers or need caregiving ourselves.
Share caregiving stories and discuss what we know about navigating the healthcare system, researching in-home care, assisted living or nursing facilities and handling the workload. Wisdom Cafés provide space for older adults to engage in ongoing and facilitated conversations about livability issues affecting all people as we grow.

Recology Store Pop-up @ City Hall
Due to the temporary closure of the Shoreline Recology Store, Recology is hosting small pop-ups for Shoreline residents at City Hall.
From 10 am-4 pm Shoreline residents can drop off LIMITED quantities of the following hard-to-recycle items:
Fluorescent bulbs
Textiles
Books
Electronics
Small appliances
Styrofoam
Small propane canisters
