Making Waves in Shoreline: McDonald Swim School’s Passion for Water Safety
When it comes to water safety and learning to swim, McDonald Swim School is making a splash in Shoreline! This beloved local business has helped countless individuals—both kids and adults—gain confidence in the water through private and semi-private swim lessons. What started as a simple trade between neighbors has grown into a thriving swim school, offering high-quality, personalized instruction in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Get to know McDonald Swim School and its founder, who turned a love for swimming into a mission to help others feel safe and confident in the water.
What inspired you to start your business?
As a mom with a background in swimming and water safety, I started teaching lessons in the most natural way—by trading skills with a neighbor. She had a pool, and I swapped babysitting my infant for teaching her four-year-old to swim. I LOVED it. It gave me a break from mom life while doing something I was passionate about—helping kids gain life-saving skills in the water.
That one trade quickly turned into more lessons, then even more. Soon, I needed a nanny to keep up with demand, then I was opening new locations, hiring staff, and now, I have a facility of my own! It all started from a small, simple moment, and it grew into something bigger than I ever imagined.
What service does your business provide for our community?
At McDonald Swim School LLC, we teach private and semi-private swim lessons to people of all ages and swimming abilities. In the pool, we learn to swim by having fun, building confidence, and overcoming fears!
As former competitive swimmers, our teachers radiate a love for the water while teaching students how to swim with proper technique. Our unique private setting allows for a relaxed and fun yet focused atmosphere where we uncover fears and unlock potential. We embrace every opportunity and look forward to teaching you or your kids how to swim!
What do you love the most about Shoreline?
Shoreline has such a strong sense of community. Families here truly care about their kids’ experiences and are looking for quality, well-run programs. It’s been amazing to bring McDonald Swim School to Shoreline and see how excited families are to have access to year-round swim lessons.
The city has also been incredibly supportive—everything from featuring us in Destination Shoreline to helping small businesses like mine get established.
What’s one thing you wish your customers knew about you but never ask?
I wish more people knew just how incredible our staff really is. I get to mentor, encourage, and build friendships with them, and walking alongside them as they grow into young adults is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
They are professional, dedicated, and genuinely care about you and your kids. Our instructors don’t just show up to teach—they invest in each swimmer’s progress and confidence in the water. Seeing their passion and commitment firsthand makes me so proud, and I wish every family could see just how much heart they pour into every lesson.
What has been your proudest moment in business so far?
Without a doubt, it was the first time I swam in our new Shoreline pool after the remodel, with my family. After all the hard work, planning, and problem-solving, that moment felt surreal.
My kids were laughing and splashing in a pool I had built from the ground up. It wasn’t even 100% finished yet, but it was ours, and it was ready enough to bring joy. That moment made everything worth it.
How do you approach customer service, and what sets you apart?
With my background in corporate customer service, I know that clear, proactive communication is everything. At McDonald Swim School, we strive to make scheduling and lesson planning as smooth as possible.
We don’t just rely on email—we pick up the phone and talk to families. If there’s ever a question or concern, we’re available to help. My admin assistant, Linsi, makes calls daily because we know that personal communication makes a difference. The personal attention, in and out of the pool, is what makes our program stand out.
